OperationHow does PrecisionVision AI obstacle avoidance differ from older iRobot vacuums?
PrecisionVision uses a front-facing RGB camera to identify household objects such as cords, socks and pet waste, and steers around them mid-run rather than bumping into them. The same camera provides vSLAM navigation; the j7+ carries no LiDAR. Firmware updates have refined detection since launch.
OwnershipWhat actual runtime and coverage per charge?
iRobot publishes no runtime or square-footage figure for the j7+. The robot cleans until the battery runs low, returns to the Clean Base, recharges, and resumes where it stopped until the job is finished, so a single charge does not cap coverage. Carpet and obstacle-heavy rooms extend the elapsed time for a given area.
OperationHow often must the self-empty dock bag be replaced?
iRobot rates the Clean Base at up to 60 days of debris. The app reports when the bag is full, and shedding pets, heavy carpet and larger floor areas shorten the interval. Bags are sold in multi-packs by iRobot and third-party suppliers.
CompatibilityDoes the j7+ require Wi-Fi connectivity to operate?
The j7+ requires Wi-Fi for initial setup, app connectivity, and scheduling. Local on-device mapping persists across WiFi outages, but remote commands and scheduling fail without internet.
OperationWhat happens when the robot encounters an obstacle it cannot avoid?
For objects PrecisionVision recognizes, the robot steers around them and continues the run. For objects outside the trained set, the bumper and cliff sensors take over: it makes contact or detects the drop, reverses, and reroutes. It stops and requests help only when it is wedged or cannot free itself, reporting the error in the app.
OwnershipAre replacement brushes and filters readily available?
Dual multi-surface brushes, filters, side brushes and Clean Base bags are sold by iRobot and third-party suppliers. Brushes are replaced when the rubber vanes flatten or the side brush bristles bend rather than on a fixed schedule; the filter is tapped clean weekly and replaced roughly every two months.
OperationWhat data does the j7+ collect and transmit?
Camera imagery, map and motion data transmit to iRobot servers for mapping and obstacle training. Users can opt out of camera image sharing but cannot disable the map data required for app features. iRobot specifies encryption in transit and states retention terms for anonymized sensor data.
