ComparisonHow much does the heated dock improve mop-pad lifespan versus non-heated drying?

iRobot publishes no pad-life figure with or without heated drying, so there is no interval to compare. What heated drying addresses is a damp pad sitting in the dock between runs, which is a mildew and odor question in humid homes rather than a wear one. Pads are replaced by condition.

OperationDoes the Roomba Plus 505 Combo add any new mopping capabilities compared to the 405?

They are not identical. The 505 adds SmartScrub, a back-and-forth scrubbing pass, and PerfectEdge, which extends the pad sideways to reach edges and which iRobot rates at 18 percent more mopping coverage; the 405’s pads do not extend. Navigation differs as well: the 505 carries a front-facing camera running PrecisionVision AI object recognition, and the 405 has no camera.

The app allows toggling obstacle detection on and off. With it off, the robot stops using PrecisionVision recognition to steer around cords, socks and pet waste, so those have to be off the floor before a run. iRobot publishes no run-time difference between the two modes. The recognition runs on the robot itself, from a front-facing camera that images the floor ahead of it.

OperationCan the 505 Combo's heated dock work with third-party mop pads?

iRobot publishes no restriction on pad brands for this dock, and there is no heating chamber that a pad seats into: the dock washes the pad and dries it in place. What third-party pads change is fit and absorbency, which is what governs how a pad seats and washes, and iRobot’s limited warranty excludes defects arising from non-recommended consumables. Nothing iRobot publishes supports the idea that another maker’s pad damages the heating element.

Heating uses the existing dock power outlet. Water consumption is unchanged, and iRobot rates the dock at 4 weeks of mopping and pad washing per fill, after which the tank is refilled by hand.
