OperationDoes it actually mop or just spray water?
It mops via vibrating pad and water flow for light-to-medium soil removal. Owner reports indicate performance similar to manual spray-mop on tile and sealed wood. Heavy grime requires manual attention. Manufacturer documentation specifies no heated water option.
OperationHow long does battery last, and can it resume cleaning?
Manufacturer specs: 90-120 minutes depending on vacuum-only vs. combo mode. Returns to dock at 20% battery. Auto-resume from dock for unfinished rooms is supported via app.
OperationWhat happens if I have stairs?
The robot carries cliff sensors. iRobot states that its sensors help it navigate around furniture and avoid falling down stairs. It cannot move between floors on its own, so a multi-floor home means carrying the robot up or down and running each level separately.
OperationHow often do I clean or replace the mop pad?
The pad is washable microfiber, attached and removed by hand. iRobot rates it for up to 30 uses before replacement. Rinse it after each mop run and let it dry fully; a pad left damp in place is the usual source of mold and odor.
OperationDoes it map rooms like the Combo j7+ or j9+?
No. Gyroscope-only navigation, no LiDAR or camera. Cannot create or recall room layouts. Coverage patterns are based on internal momentum, making results less precise in complex spaces than higher-tier models.
OperationCan I restrict it to certain rooms?
No. The Combo Essential supports no keep-out zones, no room selection and no editable map. The Clean Map report it produces after a run is illustrative rather than a floor plan that can be annotated. Anything the robot has to stay off, including rugs during a mop run, has to be blocked physically.
OwnershipWhat is the warranty?
One-year limited hardware warranty covering manufacturing defects. Accident damage, normal wear, and mop pad degradation not covered. Extended warranty available through retailers.
