OperationIs the 980 still worth buying secondhand?
It is still a usable daily machine. The 980 runs in the iRobot Home Classic app, and consumables are ordinary retail stock rather than salvage: iRobot lists the 3300 lithium-ion battery at $129.99, the 800/900 cleaning head at $79.99, replacement bins at $59.99 and wheel modules at $29.99, with third-party filter and side-brush kits stocked new elsewhere. What a buyer gives up against a current robot is the saved map and object recognition, not support or parts.
ComparisonHow does the 980's vSLAM compare to modern LiDAR mapping?
The 980’s camera vSLAM maps only the run in progress, so a multi-room layout is rediscovered every time it leaves the dock. Robots with persistent maps store the plan after the first pass or two and route against it afterward, whether they map with a camera like the Roomba j7+ or with LiDAR like the Roborock S7. The 980 covers the same floor less directly and spends more battery doing it.
OperationWhy did iRobot move away from the 980 design?
Competition from Roborock’s LiDAR models (2017 onward) proved faster and cheaper. iRobot pivoted to app-first autonomy and cloud subscriptions. The 980 represented the last all-local mapping flagship; its successors require cloud connectivity for premium features.
OperationWhat is the battery capacity and runtime?
The 980 ships with iRobot’s 3300 mAh, 14.4 V lithium-ion pack, and iRobot publishes roughly 120 minutes of runtime on it. Capacity falls with charge cycles, so an original pack on a decade-old unit runs shorter than a new one. Replacements are a current iRobot item, part 4462425, at $129.99.
CompatibilityDoes the 980 require Wi-Fi or a specific app?
Wi-Fi is optional for cleaning but required for the app. Pressing CLEAN on the robot starts a run with no network involved, and the robot maps locally via camera either way. The app side is still live: the 980 is a supported robot in the iRobot Home Classic app.
