OperationHow does DirtSense decide when to trigger a mid-run mop pad wash?
Narwal describes DirtSense as sensor arrays and algorithms that read how dirty the mops and the wash water are; the robot then washes the pads and returns to re-mop the area that dirtied them. Thresholds can be adjusted in the app, and the algorithm itself is proprietary. Narwal documents no pad-contact pressure sensor. Separately from DirtSense, the Freo washes its mops on a fixed area interval of every 8, 10, or 12 square meters depending on mode, so dock returns are routine rather than exceptional.
OperationCan the Freo be used as a vacuum-only robot, skipping mop runs entirely?
Yes, the robot can be configured for vacuum-only operation through the app. However, owner reports indicate the vacuum performance is adequate but not competitive with dedicated vacuum flagships at the same price point.
OperationWhat happens if the dock water runs out mid-cycle?
Manufacturer specifies that the robot will complete the current mop pad wash and return to home on final water supply. A full refill is required before the next scheduled run. The dock does not refill automatically.
ComparisonHow does the Freo compare to the Freo Z Ultra in terms of dock features?
The Freo’s base washes the pads with cold water, uses DirtSense to trigger extra washes when the mops and the wash water read dirty, and dries the pads with dual fans and heaters at 104 F to cut drying time and discourage mold. Heated drying is already here, not something a later model introduces. On navigation, the Z Ultra does not swap LiDAR for cameras: it runs LiDAR SLAM 4.0 and adds dual RGB cameras on top of it.
OperationDoes the DirtSense re-wash extend mop-pad lifespan, and by how much?
No published measurement supports a figure. Washing the pads repeatedly during a run keeps them from pushing soil around for the rest of the cycle, but pad life on this machine should follow Narwal’s own replacement guidance rather than a multiple of other platforms. Replacement pads cost approximately $20-25 per pair.
