Tom's Guide's hands-on review notes that, unlike the j7+ Combo, the j5+ cannot retract its mop arm and "you have to swap out the dustbin for the mop bin" by hand, so a person opens every mopping run, while the vacuum job runs to completion and self-empties at the base.

OperationCan the j5+ vacuum and mop in the same session, or do you swap bins every time?

It does both in the same session. iRobot states that with the Roomba Combo bin installed the j5+ will always vacuum and mop simultaneously, and that the robot instantly switches from vacuum to vacuum-and-mop mode when that bin is installed. The swap is not between two jobs; it is between a dry vacuum bin and a Combo bin that carries dust and water together and does both jobs in one pass.

OperationWhat happens if you leave the mopping bin installed?

Self-emptying stops until you swap back, and that is the whole of it. iRobot disables Automatic Dirt Disposal, along with Dirt Detect, while the Roomba Combo mopping bin is installed, so the Clean Base does not attempt to evacuate that bin and there is no water path into the dock. The dock has no mode of its own; the bin carries the identity. The result of leaving the Combo bin in is debris accumulating in the bin for you to empty by hand.

OperationHow does mopping work without water heating or auto-lift?

Water is ambient temperature and the pad does not lift. With the mopping bin fitted the j5+ does not avoid carpet on its own, so rugs have to be excluded before the run starts: draw No Mop Zones in the app, or restrict the run to rooms without carpet. Independent testing has confirmed that automatic carpet detection does not operate in this configuration. Left unset, the wet pad is dragged across whatever soft flooring lies on the route.
