  2. Amazon-iRobot acquisition termination leaves Combo j5+ pricing unstable

Following the January 2024 termination of the Amazon acquisition, iRobot announced significant layoffs and a strategic restructuring that included pausing some product lines and discounting existing inventory.

    ScoreValue improved

The Combo j5+ appeared at reduced retail prices across Amazon and major retailers in the months after the announcement.

WatchingWhether iRobot's restructuring limits future firmware support for the j5 line.

    Impact on autonomy

    • No firmware changes documented at this point; autonomy classification unchanged
    • Continued app support confirmed at time of entry; long-term support timeline unspecified

    Impact on readiness

    • Street price dropped below MSRP at major retail channels in Q1 2024
    • Future firmware support cadence uncertain given company restructuring
    • Product remained available for purchase; no discontinuation announcement for the j5+

iRobot's continued commitment to innovation and product support
iRobot announced roughly 31% workforce reduction in January 2024 concurrent with acquisition termination; product line scope was under review per company disclosures
Roomba platform supported with regular software updates
iRobot did not publicly commit to a specific update schedule for the j5 line post-restructuring; owner reports confirm app functionality remained intact through Q1 2024
    Premium pricing reflects premium engineering
Combo j5+ retail price dropped to below-MSRP levels at major retailers within weeks of the restructuring announcement, reflecting inventory pressure rather than a planned price reduction

Bottom lineThe business disruption did not immediately affect product function, but it introduced uncertainty about the long-term software support trajectory that prospective buyers should factor into any purchase decision.

    Business Context

Amazon announced on January 28, 2024 that it was terminating its proposed acquisition of iRobot. The deal had been pending regulatory review since August 2022. iRobot CEO Colin Angle departed the same day. The company subsequently announced a workforce reduction of approximately 350 positions and a review of its product roadmap.

    Combo j5+ Impact

No hardware or firmware changes were announced for the Combo j5+ at this time. The product remained listed and available on iRobot.com and Amazon. Third-party retailers offered the unit at prices below the $599 MSRP in the weeks following the announcement, consistent with broader inventory management.

    App and Firmware

iRobot app functionality for the j5+ continued to operate normally through this period. No update to the iRobot OS affecting the j5 line was announced concurrent with the restructuring. The firmware support trajectory for existing j-series products post-restructuring was not publicly specified by iRobot.

  4. iRobot Roomba Combo j5+ launches with swappable vacuum-mop bin design

iRobot released the Combo j5+ at $799 MSRP, adding a swappable vacuum/mop bin to the j5 platform without a shared-water dock.

    Full assessment
    AutonomyL3 confirmed
    ReadinessPromising progress strengthened
    ScoreScores established

The release extended the j-series into multi-modal cleaning at a lower price point than the Combo j9+.

WatchingWhether owner adoption rate for mopping mode justifies the weekly bin-swap discipline the design requires.

    Impact on autonomy

    • vSLAM camera navigation and multi-room mapping retained from j5 platform
    • Mopping operates as user-scheduled assisted autonomy, not automatic mode switching
    • Carpet detection prevents unintended water contact on carpet-detected floors

    Impact on readiness

    • Available at launch via iRobot.com and Amazon retail channels
    • MSRP set at $599, undercutting Combo j9+ by several hundred dollars
    • Setup requires initial mapping run plus manual first bin-swap before mopping can begin

    Claim check5 claims reviewed

Clean and mop your floors without a second robot
Accurate in outcome, but requires user bin swap between modes; not a single-pass operation
    Self-emptying dock keeps hands off
Auto-empty applies to the vacuum bin only; mopping bin must be swapped and water tank refilled manually
Intelligent carpet detection stops mopping on carpet
Carpet detection prevents water contact on carpet-detected zones; mopping on mixed floors requires correct room designation in the iRobot app
Precision Jet Spray for thorough mopping
Owner reports describe light surface wet cleaning; ambient-temperature water and non-heated pads limit effectiveness on dried or sticky residue
    PrecisionVision Navigation avoids obstacles
Camera-based obstacle avoidance is trained on common objects; performance on atypical obstacles (cables, dark rugs) is documented as inconsistent in third-party assessments

Bottom lineThe swappable-bin architecture delivers genuine multi-modal cleaning, but the mopping workflow is assisted autonomy, not hands-free automation.

    Platform

The Combo j5+ (model J6198) is built on the Roomba j5 vacuum chassis. Navigation uses vSLAM via a camera array with iAdapt 3.0 multi-room mapping. Suction is rated at 1,700 Pa. Battery capacity is 92 Wh with a 120-minute runtime and approximately 180-minute charge time.

    Bin System

The unit ships with two bins: a standard vacuum/self-emptying bin compatible with the Clean Base dock, and a mopping bin containing a water reservoir and pad mount. The dock auto-empty function operates only when the vacuum bin is installed. Switching to the mopping bin disables auto-empty and requires a manual water fill. Mop pads are reusable and washable.

    Dock

The Clean Base Automatic Dirt Disposal dock auto-empties dirt into an enclosed bag. Dock operates normally with the vacuum bin; it does not dispense or recover water.

    Connectivity

Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz), Alexa and Google Assistant compatible. App-based scheduling for both vacuum and mopping cycles via iRobot app. Carpet detection via floor sensor prevents mopping on carpet-detected surfaces unless overridden.
