Husqvarna Automower 405XE NERA

A 600 m² Automower for small lawns, sold in two configurations: the base machine, which is installed with a boundary wire, and a separately listed wire free technology version that adds the EPOS Plug-in module and app-drawn virtual boundaries for roughly 400 pounds more. Automower Connect covers scheduling, zone control, remote start and stop, and location tracking. The trade-off is that the configuration decides both the installation effort and the price, and long-term robustness across weather and boundary edge cases is not established by owner data.

The record so far

March 2025 release means <4 months of broad consumer operation. Husqvarna's Automower track record is strong (S-series reliability 80-90), but wire-free EPOS introduces a new failure mode (signal loss, positioning drift). No firmware iteration history yet.

Upkeep routine
Weekly52×/yr

Check the for dents and dulling; clear cut grass from the deck and around the blade discs. The Automower mulches, so there is no discharge chute or collector to empty.

Monthly12×/yr

Inspect and clean charging-station to prevent corrosion.

Seasonal4×/yr

Replace the along with their screws. Husqvarna states Automower blades are single-use and must never be sharpened, because sharpening weakens the blade's safety coating and can lead to blade breakage. The mower carries two discs of three blades; Husqvarna Classic blades sell in packs of 9 or 45, from about £21 for the 9-pack with screws included.

Charge the battery fully, clean the machine, and store it indoors above freezing over winter.

Yearly1×/yr

Apply firmware updates as released and verify the boundary installation before the first run of the season.

Common questions

What people actually ask.

5 answered
OperationDoes the Automower 405XE NERA actually need a perimeter wire buried?
In the base configuration, yes. Husqvarna sells the 405XE NERA as a boundary wire machine and lists the 405XE NERA with wire free technology as a separate product, roughly 400 pounds more, which replaces the wire with EPOS virtual boundaries. EPOS is described by Husqvarna as an optional add-on, and a NERA machine also needs the EPOS Plug-in module fitted to the back of the mower. Either way, a charging station must be placed at a fixed location.
OperationWhat happens to the mower if it loses EPOS signal during operation?
Manufacturer specs indicate the mower returns to the charging station upon signal loss. This is a safety feature but results in incomplete mowing if signal gaps occur mid-session. Dense tree canopy, buildings, and poor weather reduce signal reliability.
OwnershipHow often do blade changes cost, and what is the interval?
Husqvarna’s stated interval is blade replacement every 4 to 8 weeks of active mowing, depending on grass type and density. Blades are replaced rather than sharpened, along with their screws, because sharpening weakens the blade’s safety coating and can lead to breakage. The mower carries two discs of three blades. Husqvarna Classic blades sell in packs of 9 or 45, from about £21 for the 9-pack with screws included, so a 9-pack covers a set and a half and annual blade cost on a 600 m² lawn is on the order of £20 to £40.
OperationCan I control the 405XE NERA remotely via smartphone?
Automower Connect provides control from anywhere: setting and changing schedules, tracking the mower’s location, and starting or stopping the mower. Husqvarna also documents Alexa and Google Assistant integration, Zone Control for multiple work areas with separate settings, GPS theft tracking and over-the-air firmware updates. Locating the mower in the app works because the machine reports its position to Husqvarna’s cloud service. A physical STOP button on the body stops the machine and the blades at the mower itself.
OperationIs the 405XE NERA suitable for lawns with slopes?
Husqvarna publishes two slope figures for this model: 30 percent maximum inside the installation and 20 percent maximum at the boundary. Those are gradients, not degrees, so 30 percent is about 16.7 degrees and 20 percent is about 11.3 degrees. The two figures exist because a mower turning at the boundary on a gradient is the case that loses traction, so the boundary figure is the one that governs where the wire or the virtual boundary can be routed on sloping ground.
