OperationWhy is the original Mi Robot Vacuum historically significant?
It was among the first consumer-grade vacuums to use consumer-accessible LiDAR for room mapping, launched at $299-$399. Xiaomi published an LDS module scanning 360 degrees at 1,800 times per second, feeding a SLAM algorithm across three processors. That price-to-capability ratio accelerated the entire category’s LiDAR adoption.
OperationWhy was the Mi Robot Vacuum discontinued?
This vacuum was designed and built by Beijing Rockrobo, the Xiaomi ecosystem-chain company later known as Roborock, and it was that company’s first product. Owners and parts suppliers still call it the Roborock v1, and its main brush, side brush and filter are cross-listed with the later Roborock E and S series. Rockrobo went on to sell under its own brand while Xiaomi’s vacuum line moved to newer models, and the 2016 unit was withdrawn behind them.
OperationWhat makes it different from Roomba and Neato vacuums of the same era?
The Mi Robot used LiDAR-based SLAM navigation (manufacturer disclosures); iRobot Roombas of that generation relied on gyroscope + random coverage; Neato used LiDAR but charged a $200 premium. The Xiaomi model compressed the price while matching Neato’s navigation approach.
