OperationIs Amazon Astro currently available for purchase?
Astro remains in invite-only Day 1 Edition as of June 2026. It is not sold through standard retail channels (Amazon.com, Best Buy, others). Waitlist status is not publicly updated; production is assumed limited.
OperationCan Astro autonomously patrol my home and avoid obstacles?
Yes. Astro navigates by visual SLAM, building a persistent floor plan of the home that it refines as it moves, and it learns room labels during setup, which is a step every owner performs. It can be sent to a named room and can patrol on a schedule. Obstacle avoidance handles ordinary household clutter and, like any floor robot, is defeated by cables, thresholds and small objects. Astro does not use stairs, so it operates on one level at a time.
OperationWhat can Astro actually carry, and how?
In a removable bin at the back, rated to roughly 2 kg (4.4 lb). There is no arm and no gripper on the robot. A person loads the bin, Astro drives it to a room or to a person, and a person takes the contents out. Amazon sells accessories that mount in the same slot, including a cup holder.
CompatibilityDoes Astro work without a strong Wi-Fi signal?
It needs a working home network, though not for navigation. The floor plan is built and held on the device, so a dropout does not take away Astro’s ability to move around the house. What a dropout costs is the remote half: alerts, notifications, live view and remote commands. Amazon publishes no single-band requirement for the radio.
OperationWhat happened to Astro development after 2022?
General consumer availability has not opened since the Day 1 Edition launch, though the platform has not been static either. Amazon shipped an Astro for Business variant in November 2023 and discontinued it in July 2024, and coverage of the home unit through 2025 describes software updates to obstacle avoidance and smart-home integration. What has not arrived is broad availability or a hardware revision.
