The Verge calls the mobile security camera "Astro's most useful function," one camera that "can cover every angle of your home" and replaces most fixed indoor cameras, but the identification layer it depends on "only worked sporadically": Visual ID is "hit or miss," it often mistook the reviewer's daughter for the reviewer, and in testing it alerted "often when it saw someone it was supposed to know but didn't recognize," leaving a human to sort the alerts. CNET adds that its unprompted patrol needed correcting: "I often found myself sending it back to its dock in these cases, as it had some trouble moving out of the way in our narrow kitchen."

PCMag reports that "in testing, the Astro quickly and accurately mapped my home on its first try," that the map is retained and editable in the app (rotate the floorplan, adjust room boundaries, set Out of Bounds zones), and that it "generally has an easy time navigating my roughly 1,000-square-foot home."

What that record documents is the problem: the machine's own fit_for accepts hardware instability, its skip_for accepts firmware instability, and the takeaway describes frequent manual intervention as the condition of ownership. That is a pervasive pattern rather than isolated failures, though no single job-stopping mode is named. Forum evidence is unlinked.

Independent press coverage through 2025 documents software updates that improved obstacle avoidance and smart-home integration, which is a genuine record of updates fixing things, and Amazon is not an opaque vendor. OperationCan Astro autonomously patrol my home and avoid obstacles?

Yes. Astro navigates by visual SLAM, building a persistent floor plan of the home that it refines as it moves, and it learns room labels during setup, which is a step every owner performs. It can be sent to a named room and can patrol on a schedule. Obstacle avoidance handles ordinary household clutter and, like any floor robot, is defeated by cables, thresholds and small objects. Astro does not use stairs, so it operates on one level at a time.

OperationWhat can Astro actually carry, and how?

In a removable bin at the back, rated to roughly 2 kg (4.4 lb). There is no arm and no gripper on the robot. A person loads the bin, Astro drives it to a room or to a person, and a person takes the contents out. Amazon sells accessories that mount in the same slot, including a cup holder.

CompatibilityDoes Astro work without a strong Wi-Fi signal?

It needs a working home network, though not for navigation. The floor plan is built and held on the device, so a dropout does not take away Astro’s ability to move around the house. What a dropout costs is the remote half: alerts, notifications, live view and remote commands. Amazon publishes no single-band requirement for the radio.

General consumer availability has not opened since the Day 1 Edition launch, though the platform has not been static either.
