iRobot Roomba Plus 505 Combo vs 405 Combo: What the Camera Actually Adds
iRobot's own support answer says the camera on the Roomba Plus 505 Combo can be switched off in the app entirely, with no published difference in cleaning time either way. The two hundred dollar gap over the camera-free 405 buys one recognition sensor, one mopping mechanism, and a heated dock built around pad hygiene, not a different autonomy classification: both machines are rated Level III in the Robovations database.
iRobot markets the front-facing camera on the Roomba Plus 505 Combo as the reason it can steer around cords, socks and pet waste that a robot without one would smear across the floor. Released in March 2025, the 505 sits at the top of iRobot’s redesigned Combo line at $999, two hundred dollars above the Roomba Plus 405 Combo, which carries the identical Level III classification and the same advanced mopping rating but ships with no camera of any kind.
iRobot’s own product FAQ already answers a version of the question a buyer would ask before paying the premium: what happens if the camera gets switched off. The published answer names the tradeoff directly, and it is the starting point for what the 505 actually documents about the feature it is named for.

That distinction is central to why the 405 Combo, the model directly below it in the same lineup, has no camera at all. Its obstacle handling depends on the same LiDAR mapping every Combo model carries, without a second sensor dedicated to identifying what an object actually is before the robot reaches it. The Robovations readiness assessment for the 505 credits the same camera and dock with reducing setup complexity relative to the base models in the line, a documented factor in why the record calls it available for purchase through major retailers rather than a niche configuration.

iRobot’s product FAQ addresses this directly: the app allows toggling obstacle detection on and off. With it off, the robot stops using PrecisionVision to steer around cords, socks and pet waste, so those items have to be cleared from the floor before a run, the same requirement that already applies to the camera-free 405. iRobot publishes no run-time difference between the two modes, so there is no documented figure for how much faster a run goes with detection off, or how much slower it runs with detection on.
On the Robovations Score, the camera lifts the 505’s edge-recovery input above the level the methodology sets for a robot that cannot identify an object before contact. What holds it short of a higher mark is the absence of any documented recovery behavior for situations the camera does not catch. No owner data describes the robot freeing itself from a wedged position, and the record notes that the AutoWash dock runs washing, drying and bin evacuation on a single water circuit, so one fault in that circuit stops all three functions at once and needs a person to intervene.
One owner report in the aggregation, translated from Polish, describes navigation performance as strong and says they do not understand the complaints some other owners raise about the robot; the same collection of reports names no missed-region or coverage complaint.

That single data point does not resolve the open question so much as narrow it. The record’s coverage and navigation input is built on reports like this one rather than an independent lab test of the LiDAR map, and the camera’s own contribution to that number is specifically the objects it avoids, not the rooms it finds.
The camera’s documented scope is also narrower than the whole machine. The top-mounted LiDAR turret adds height, which limits the low furniture the robot can pass under, and a separate owner account describes the mop running too wet on first use.
PrecisionVision avoids the object classes iRobot names for it. It does not touch clearance or mop saturation.

The camera is not the only thing the 405 Combo lacks. The 505 also adds SmartScrub, a back-and-forth scrubbing pass rather than a single wipe, and PerfectEdge, a mechanism that extends the mop pad sideways to reach along walls and into corners. The 405’s pads do not extend at all.
iRobot rates the combination at 18 percent more mopping coverage than a design without the extending pad, a manufacturer figure with no independent test cited against it in the record.
Owner and reviewer accounts line up on the mopping result more than they do on any single number. One owner in the same aggregation, running the unit since June and stating they were not paid for the account, rated hard-floor vacuuming 90 out of 100 and mopping 65 out of 100, and specifically credited SmartScrub with improving the mop result.
The record’s task-completion input sits on exactly this kind of mixed account: strong on the surfaces and debris types the reports actually describe, without a documented figure for the harder cases, deep-pile carpet or wall-to-wall spills, that neither reviewer nor owner reports directly address.

Heated drying addresses a specific problem: a damp pad left in the dock between runs, a mildew and odor issue in humid homes rather than a wear issue. iRobot publishes no pad-lifespan figure tied to heated drying, so there is no interval to compare it against a non-heated design. The maintenance record for the 505 lists a weekly pad inspection and water refill, a monthly filter clean and a wipe of the pad tray and drain path, mop pad replacement by condition roughly every three to four months at 40 to 50 dollars a pair, and an annual filter swap. None of that schedule is unique to the camera; it belongs to the mopping and dock system the 405 shares in a simplified form.
