WIRED describes it scurrying back to the Clean Base mid run, emptying itself and carrying on, and cleaning zone by zone rather than skipping from room to room, so the between run step is handled without a person. Trusted Reviews' flour tests found it "cleared the top-level dirt" on carpet but "couldn't pull out the final traces" deeper in the pile, while practically all the flour came up on hard floor.

Tom's Guide found it "downright methodical, going back and forth in parallel lines" and winding carefully around chair legs, and that it stores up to 10 editable floor plans. Review in Detail says it tracks "precisely where it has already been and where it has to go" and covered a 900 square foot apartment in 40 minutes.

Modern Castle's 18 month test states plainly that "it still gets stuck", with cords and the robot closing a bathroom or closet door behind itself as the biggest offenders. Tech Advisor notes it is "unlikely to get beached in your home" and speaks an audio prompt "if something is caught in the cleaning mechanism", so it halts and reports but a person frees it.

Review in Detail measured a 0.75 inch (1.9 cm) climb over hard 90 degree edges, but found the camera navigation slows in poor light and that the i7+ "is not able to do its job in the dark". PCMag adds that it "trawled over loose cords and raised ledges with aplomb" yet could not cross a two inch marble threshold.

Eight years of field record across millions of units, the first Clean Base deployed at scale, so no cap applies. One recurring mode is documented and it is neither universal nor job-stopping: dock bag-seal failures, more frequent than the current s9+ generation, leaking dust into the cavity. No recall. Owner reports put dock life at four to seven years, which is a service-life figure rather than a defect. The record's sources are unlinked, which is a real weakness, but eight years of r/RoombaClub and Amazon is independent evidence in kind.

There is an update channel and the record states connected i-series robots continue to receive software through the iRobot Home app, but iRobot publishes no update history for this model, so the record is explicit that the state of its software support cannot be established either way. Placed a little above 50 because eight years of an active independent owner forum has surfaced no regression pattern on this platform, which is a longer silence than a new model's.

Scored as commitments and this is where the i7+ falls. iRobot has moved it to legacy status: critical bug fixes are supported and new feature requests are redirected to newer models, and no changelog is published for it. The January 2026 Picea Robotics acquisition adds uncertainty to a platform already in legacy.

The recurring physical task is pulling the main and side brush every two to four weeks for matted debris, with a weekly tangle check and a monthly dock cavity and contact wipe.

OperationIs the i7+ discontinued, or can I still get official iRobot support?

Not officially discontinued, but iRobot has moved the i7+ to legacy status. Critical bug fixes are supported; new feature requests are redirected to newer models. Parts are still available.

OperationWhat is the difference between the i7+ and the i6 or i4 without the dock?

The ‘+’ denotes the Clean Base auto-empty dock, and it is not exclusive to the i7. iRobot shipped i1+, i3+, i4+, i5+ and i8+ with the same dock, and the i3+ EVO was for a long stretch the cheapest self-emptying robot in the lineup. The non-plus version of each robot ships with a charging dock instead and is emptied by hand.

OperationWill the i7+ work with newer docks like the s9+ Clean Base, or is the dock proprietary?

No. The i7+ dock and s9+ dock are not compatible. Owners cannot swap docks between models.

ComparisonHow does the i7+ map multiple floors, and can it dock on floors other than the primary one?

Imprint Smart Mapping stores up to 10 floor plans, and the robot recognizes which of them it is on once it has been carried there. It does not travel between floors: cliff sensors detect the drop at a staircase and turn it away, which is what they are for. The Clean Base stays on one floor, so a run on another level ends with the robot away from its dock and needing to be carried back.

OperationDoes the i7+ require a subscription to use Imprint mapping or room selection?

No. All mapping and room selection features are free with the mobile app. iRobot does not gate these behind a subscription on the i7+.
