A robot vacuum that sells for $1,200 today might require $400 in brushes and filters, $300 in out-of-warranty repairs, and $500 in subscription services over five years. The advertised price is an entry fee, not a completion fee.

The same pattern holds for autonomous mowers and pool cleaners. Each category layers its own wear schedule, warranty cliff, and subscription tier on top of the sticker price. The total is rarely visible until year three or four of ownership.

Subscription gating changes competitive comparisons. A robot priced attractively at purchase may require paid subscriptions to unlock features that rivals include free. Calculate five-year TCO for the two or three models under serious consideration. A model that appears 20 percent cheaper at the register may cost 10 percent more over five years when all costs are accounted for.
