The 400-Meter World Record Just Fell to a Robot
A Beijing-built humanoid ran 400 meters in 38.15 seconds, nearly five seconds faster than the standing human world record, at a competition where running events are among the only ones that require full robot autonomy rather than remote control. The figure comes from the machine's own developer, not an independent timekeeper.

A Tiangong Ultra robot, developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, ran 400 meters in 38.15 seconds at the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, nearly five seconds faster than Wayde van Niekerk’s human world record of 43.03 seconds. The time was announced by TianGong Robotics’ own account, which described the run as its “400m final,” calling it a case of “breaking the human world record once again.” Other coverage of the same event describes the same run as finishing in “under 40 seconds.”
The run happened inside a competition built specifically for humanoid robots, not a sanctioned athletics record attempt. The Games run August 22 through 26, 2026 at Beijing’s National Speed Skating Oval and drew 666 teams and 2,056 robots across 51 events this year, more than double the field size of last year’s inaugural edition. The 38.15-second figure is self-reported by the robot’s own developer; nothing establishes that an outside athletics body timed or officiated the run.

Running events at the Games require the competing robot to operate on its own, without remote control, a rule the Games apply unevenly. Other events at the same Games, including weightlifting and kickboxing, still let a team pilot its robot by hand. That split matters for reading the number: this result reflects what the robot itself decided and executed, not a person driving it through the course.

What this result establishes: a humanoid robot completed a timed 400-meter run faster than the standing human world record, at an event organized for exactly that comparison, days after a separate robot at the same Games ran the 100 meters faster than any human on record. What it does not establish: comparability with human track athletics, which is run under different rules, on a different surface, and under timing and officiating standards a robotics competition does not use. It also does not establish independent verification of the time, since the number comes from the machine’s own developer rather than a neutral timekeeper, and it says nothing about whether the same capability holds outside a prepared competition track.
