Can a firmware update remove features from the robot you bought?

A robot is one of the few things you can buy that is different a year later without you touching it. The hardware is fixed at purchase. The behavior is not. Firmware updates arrive over the network and rewrite what the machine does, sometimes adding a feature that did not exist when you paid, sometimes removing one you assumed was permanent. This is normal now, and it complicates a simple idea: that a product is a fixed thing you can assess once.

For a publication built on classification, that is a structural problem. A classification is a snapshot. Firmware makes the subject move.

The optimistic case is real and common. Manufacturers ship hardware capable of more than the launch software exposes, then unlock capability over months. A navigation stack gains smarter room sequencing. An obstacle model is retrained on more categories and starts recognizing things it used to bump. Support for a smart-home standard arrives long after the unit shipped. In 2025, several premium vacuum lines gained broader Matter and Apple Home support through firmware alone, turning units already in homes into standards-compatible devices without a new purchase.

This is the genuinely good version of the connected robot. The thing you own quietly climbs, and a capability the box never promised shows up one morning in the app.

A robot you assessed at purchase is not the robot you own a year later. The hardware is the constant. The capability is a stream.

The same channel runs in the other direction. An update can move a feature that shipped as included into a subscription tier. It can drop support for an older model from the app that the model depends on to function. It can change a default, narrow a behavior, or retire a server the robot was quietly relying on. None of this requires anyone to touch the device. The robot on the shelf is the same object. What it is allowed to do has changed.

This is the part of connected ownership that deserves more skepticism than it usually gets. A feature delivered over the network is a feature that can be revised over the network. The capability you are really buying is the one the manufacturer commits to keep, and that commitment is rarely written down.

For buyers, the practical guard is to separate what the hardware can physically do from what the current software permits. The first is durable. The second is a stream the manufacturer controls. Treat any capability that lives in the app, rather than in the sensors and motors, as conditional, because the next update gets a vote.

You own the hardware outright. The behavior arrives on a subscription to the manufacturer’s intentions.
