Two architectures, two failure modes

The category has split into two architectural approaches. Each works well in some conditions and breaks down in others.

Approach A · Dock-only pad washing

Spinning pads washed at the dock

A powered dock scrubs the pad with water jets and heat-dries it automatically between runs.

Two spinning pads mop for the whole run, then the dock rinses and dries them when the robot returns. The pads carry what they pick up until docking.

Self-rinsing roller mop

The mop is rinsed and wrung out on the robot while it works, so it is not carrying the same dirty water for the whole run.

Nozzles spray clean water onto a rolling mop while a scraper pulls dirty water back into the robot, so the roller is rinsed throughout the run. The dock still washes and dries it afterward.

Where each architecture fits, by condition.

Kitchens with sticky or wet spills

When a run crosses a kitchen spill before other rooms, dock-only pads carry that residue until the robot returns. The MOVA's continuous rinse and scraper take it off the roller during the pass, per MOVA's specification.

Greasy pads and cold-water washing

Where pads pick up grease, the Qrevo S5V's dock washes them in unheated water and dries them with warm air, per Roborock retail listings. The Freo Z Ultra and MOVA Z60 docks wash in heated water.

Carpet between the rooms being mopped

All three keep a wet mop off detected carpet: the Qrevo S5V lifts its pads 10 mm, the Freo Z Ultra lifts 12 mm, and the MOVA retracts and shields its roller. None publishes a maximum pile height.
