Ambrogio L60 Elite

Wire elimination without infrastructure means unpredictable coverage in exchange for setup simplicity. Grass sensor triggers randomness; owners gain no-wire convenience but lose the certainty of systematic navigation.

Robomow RK4000

Boundary-wire guidance eliminates line-of-sight operator control, but requires significant one-time and seasonal infrastructure maintenance that systematic-mapping systems avoid.

Random coverage patterns reduce planning complexity, but result in less uniform grass height and longer mowing cycles than systematic mapping approaches.

Who each one is wrong for

Yards over 200 sqm or irregular complex shapes
Ambrogio rates maximum cutting surface at 200 m2 for this model; the 400 m2 figure belongs to the L60 Elite S+, which carries a larger 7.5 Ah battery. Random-path navigation cannot efficiently cover large or multi-zone properties. Grass-sensor alone cannot guarantee complete yard coverage.
Steep slopes or areas with dense canopy overhead
Ambrogio lists maximum slope 40%, with 50% given as the maximum allowable. Percent grade is not degrees: 40% is roughly 22 degrees. Traction on wet or loose ground falls short of the rated figure. The grass sensor reads humidity from under the deck rather than looking at the sky, so shade is not the constraint; the constraint is that any break in the grass surface reads as a boundary, and thin or patchy turf can stop the machine mid-yard.
Owners wanting uniform scheduled coverage
Random-path navigation cannot guarantee complete coverage or consistent cutting schedules. Some areas cut weekly; others monthly. Scheduled-coverage seekers need systematic navigation (wire-guided or RTK).

Properties with irregular boundaries, multiple islands, or intricate garden beds require frequent wire adjustments and manual intervention unsuitable for autonomous operation.

The RK4000 is rated for lawns up to 4,000 sq m, sold in the US as up to one acre. On a few hundred square meters the mower, its base station and its wire run are more hardware and more installation than the ground calls for.
Terrain steeper than the rated slope
Robomow's published maximum mowing slope for the RK4000 is 45 percent, which is 24 degrees. Banks steeper than that are outside the rating.
Owners prioritizing stripe patterns or aesthetic consistency
Perimeter-first with randomized fill does not produce striped patterns or uniform cutting height; systematic mapping mowers better suit aesthetic lawn maintenance.

  • Seasonally: Deploy mower, clear yard of obstacles, set grass-sensor sensitivity, test dock connection (10 minutes).
  • Every 8-12 weeks (during season): Inspect the cutting blade and replace as a set when worn or chipped ($20-30 per set). Do not sharpen: grinding a robot mower blade removes the protective coating and leaves an unbalanced cutting head on a machine that runs unattended.
  • After every 5-10 uses: Clear the deck and blade area of packed clippings. The machine mulches rather than collecting, so shredded grass builds up underneath.
  • Monthly (during season): Check dock contacts for corrosion. Verify grass-sensor sensitivity and calibrate if needed.
  • Annually: Full underdeck clean, dock connector replacement if corroded, sensor recalibration if drift observed.

  • After every use: Clear the cutting deck of compacted grass; inspect for wrapped grass or debris.
  • Weekly: Check base station charging contacts for debris or corrosion; verify the station remains level and obstruction-free.
  • Monthly: Inspect boundary wire for visible damage, gaps, or loose pegs.
  • By inspection: Check blade condition and replace when edges are rounded, chipped, or bent. Robomow publishes no fixed interval or price for RK4000 blades.
  • Annually: Perform a full boundary-wire inspection and continuity check.
  • Seasonally: Recheck base station position, clear accumulated leaves from the charging area, and confirm cutting height as the lawn enters dormancy.
