That number comes from a real regulatory requirement, not a copywriter’s guess. But it measures something narrower than most buyers assume, and it says almost nothing about what a neighbor’s bedroom window actually registers at 11 p.m.

The gap between the certified spec and the lived experience matters more for robot mowers than for almost any other consumer robot category. Mowers are the one common household robot built to operate outdoors, near property lines, on a near-daily schedule that can stretch into nighttime hours. Some manufacturers are more transparent than others about the gap between certified and perceived noise. None of this means the certified sound power rating is meaningless. It remains a useful, standardized way to compare the baseline acoustic output of different machines, and it is a genuine improvement over the unregulated, wildly inconsistent noise profile of gas equipment. The failure mode is treating a single lab-certified average as a promise about what a specific yard, at a specific distance, with a specific fence and a specific set of bedroom windows, will actually sound like at 11 p.m. That promise was never in the spec to begin with.
