  2. Roborock Home app update extends S8 no-mop zone controls

Roborock pushed a Roborock Home app update in the second half of 2023 adding per-room no-mop zone assignment, directly addressing S8 owner reports of mop-pad contact on carpet borders.

    AutonomyL3 capabilities expanded
    ReadinessPromising progress strengthened
    ScoreScores unchanged

The update does not change the S8's hardware capability ceiling but reduces a workflow friction specific to mixed-floor homes. Owner reports on whether zone persistence survives map resets under heavy furniture moves represent the outstanding verification gap.

    Impact on autonomy

    • Per-room no-mop zone assignment reduces owner intervention on mixed-floor plans
    • Zone configuration persists across cleaning sessions without requiring manual re-entry
    • Level III autonomy ceiling unchanged; update removes a workflow step, not a capability limit

    Impact on readiness

    • Owner friction on carpet-adjacent mopping reduced for configured rooms
    • Initial zone mapping still requires one setup session per floor plan
    • Owner reports note zone drift after map rebuilds; single ongoing limitation to track

No-mop zones make carpet protection automatic
Owner reports confirm the feature works as described for stable floor plans; zone drift reported after map resets or significant furniture rearrangement
Update improves cleaning intelligence for mixed homes
The update adds zone assignment; it does not add obstacle detection or carpet-edge sensing. Protection is rules-based, not sensor-driven
Compatible with all S8 hardware configurations
Update applies to base S8 via Roborock Home app; dock-free configuration receives same software features as docked variants per owner reports

    Software Change

The Roborock Home app update extended the room-level configuration UI to include per-room mop suppression toggles. Previously, no-mop areas required drawing custom virtual walls on the map. The update introduced named room zones as the primary configuration surface, reducing setup steps for common carpet-adjacent use cases.

    S8 Specific Impact

The S8 lacks dock-side auto-wash and auto-dry; mop pad contact with carpet accelerates contamination and pad wear. The zone suppression feature is therefore more consequential for S8 owners than for docked variants that automatically store the mop pad. Owner reports collected through late 2023 document successful zone retention across cleaning sessions on single-floor maps.

    Limitation

The feature is rules-based; the S8 base model has no camera or carpet-edge sensor. Zone suppression depends entirely on accurate map persistence. Map rebuilds, reported after some firmware updates, reset zones and require reconfiguration.

  3. Roborock S8 launches commercially at $649 without dock

Roborock began commercial shipments of the S8 in April 2023, establishing a $749.99 dock-free entry point into the LiDAR vacuum category.

The release separates dock automation from core cleaning capability, a configuration shift from previous S-series launches.

WatchingWhether the dock-free model drives meaningful category adoption or whether buyers migrate toward docked variants within the first purchase cycle.

    Impact on autonomy

    • LiDAR-SLAM navigation delivers Level III conditional autonomy without dock dependency
    • Dual rubber rollers replace the brush-roll design carried over from S7 series
    • Sonic mop module operates at 200 Hz; manual water refill required per session

    Impact on readiness

    • Broad retail availability confirmed across major US and EU channels at launch
    • Setup time documented at approximately 30 minutes without dock assembly
    • Manual dustbin emptying required every 2 to 4 weeks, constraining hands-off use

Sonic mop delivers superior floor cleaning
Third-party launch reviews document cleaning parity with the S7 Max Ultra mop module on hard floors; auto-wash absent on base S8
    LiDAR navigation enables room-level precision
Manufacturer specs confirm LiDAR-SLAM; multi-room mapping confirmed in press reviews; obstacle avoidance not included on base model
Lower price makes advanced cleaning accessible
$749.99 MSRP is approximately $300 less than the S8 Pro Ultra at launch; manual maintenance burden increases proportionally without dock
    Technical notes4 sections
    Platform

The S8 shares the S-series chassis with the S8 Pro Ultra but removes the dock hardware. LiDAR-SLAM navigation (manufacturer specification) builds persistent multi-room maps stored on-device. No camera module and no obstacle avoidance sensor array are present on the base configuration.

    Cleaning Hardware

Dual rubber extractors replace the main brush roller carried in earlier S-series and competitor models. Manufacturer documentation lists 6,000 Pa maximum suction. The sonic mop module vibrates at 200 Hz per manufacturer spec; the water tank requires manual filling before each mop session. No auto-empty, no auto-refill, no mop auto-wash.

    Connectivity

2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only; Bluetooth for initial setup. Roborock Home app required for full feature access. Alexa and Google Home voice control confirmed at launch.

    Battery

Manufacturer specs: 5,200 mAh pack, up to 180 minutes runtime, approximately 360 minutes charge time. Runtime reflects mixed vacuuming and mopping workloads.
