Robot Vacuum Making a Loud or Grinding Noise? Fixes

Noise is friction or looseness, and both have a small number of possible homes. Work through the parts that turn before assuming the motor.

Common causes

  • Tangled brushes or wheels: Hair, string, and carpet fibers wrapped around the main brush, side brush, or a wheel axle create grinding and rattling sounds.
  • Clogged airflow: A blocked intake, packed bin, or dirty filter forces the fan motor to work harder and run louder.
  • Debris in the fan or ducts: Small hard objects pulled into the airflow path can clatter against the impeller and produce a sharp rattle.
  • Worn or loose parts: Aging bearings, a loose brush guard, or a failing motor can produce a whine, buzz, or grind that cleaning does not resolve.

Step-by-step fixes

  1. Brush clear

    Power off and inspect the brushes.

    Remove the main and side brushes, cut away wrapped hair and string, and confirm each brush and its end caps spin freely before reinstalling.

  2. Wheels clear

    Clear the wheels and caster.

    Check the drive wheels and the front swivel wheel for debris in the axle, since a caught wheel often grinds against the housing.

  3. Bin emptied

    Empty the bin and clean the filter.

    A full bin or dirty filter raises fan noise. Tap out or replace the filter per the manual and clear the intake opening.

  4. Airway clear

    Check the airflow path for objects.

    With the robot off, look through the intake and duct for small hard debris that may be striking the fan, and remove what you can safely reach.

  5. Whole machine

    Run briefly and listen.

    After cleaning, run the robot on a hard floor and note whether the noise is gone, reduced, or unchanged, which helps locate the source.

When it is the robot, not the setup

If the brushes, wheels, filter, and airflow are clean but the noise continues, the cause is likely internal. A steady whine or grind that does not change with cleaning often points to worn motor or fan bearings. A rattle that persists with an empty bin can mean a loose internal part.
