A robot pool cleaner that gets stuck in one spot or a corner usually has a traction or obstruction problem, or its navigation has stalled: clear debris from the tracks, wheels, and intake, free any snagged cord or drain cover, and power cycle the unit to reset its path.
Why a cleaner gets stuck
- Blocked tracks or wheels. Leaves, hair, or grit wrapped around the drive parts robs the unit of grip so it spins in place.
- A clogged intake or filter. Some cleaners rely on flow for movement and suction, and a blocked intake can leave them idling in one area.
- Cord tangle or short reach. Corded models can wrap around a ladder or hit the limit of an untwisted cable and stall.
- Suction to a drain or fitting. The unit can seal against a main drain, light niche, or step and hold there.
- Tight or unusual corners. Sharp corners, tight radius steps, and steep walls can defeat a random or basic navigation pattern.
- Low battery or reduced power. A cordless unit near the end of its charge may lose the traction it needs to climb out.
Steps to free it and prevent repeats
- Remove and inspect the drive parts. Lift the unit out, clear the tracks, wheels, brushes, and axles of hair and debris, and confirm they turn freely.
- Clear the intake and filter. Empty the filter and check the intake throat for a blockage that could stall movement or suction.
- Untwist and reposition the cord. For corded units, lay the cable out straight to remove twist, and place the power supply so the reach covers the far end of the pool.
- Move it off drains and fittings. Reposition the unit away from the main drain, steps, and light niches where it tends to seal or wedge.
- Power cycle and recharge. Turn the unit off and on to reset its cycle, and fully charge a cordless model before the next run.
- Watch one full cycle. Observe whether it now works free of the corner or returns to the same spot, which narrows the cause.
When it is the cleaner, not the pool
Repeated sticking can point to an internal fault. Signs include a drive motor that hums but does not turn, a track or wheel that binds even when clean, or navigation that returns to the exact same corner every cycle after the tracks, cord, and intake are clear. A worn drive belt, failed gearbox, or faulty sensor is a hardware issue rather than a placement problem.
