A robot mower that will not start is usually stopped by a safety condition it is designed to check first: a PIN lock, a lifted or open cover, a lost boundary or satellite signal, a charging or battery problem, or a schedule and weather setting that is quietly holding it in the dock.
Common reasons a robot mower will not start
- Safety lock engaged. Most mowers require a PIN or app confirmation after being lifted, opened, or moved. Until that is cleared, the blades stay disabled.
- Power or charging fault. A dirty charging contact, an unpowered dock, or a battery that has drained fully can leave the mower unable to reach a startable charge level.
- Lost guidance signal. Boundary-wire models will not run if the wire loop is broken or the base station is off. Wire-free RTK models will not run without a satellite fix and a reachable reference antenna.
- Schedule or weather hold. Rain sensors, frost protection, and calendar settings can keep the mower docked even when it appears ready.
- Blocked or tilted mower. Lift, tilt, and obstacle sensors will prevent starting if the deck is off the ground or an object is under it.
Step-by-step fixes
- Confirm the dock has power. Check the base station indicator light and the wall outlet. For boundary-wire systems, a lit station usually means the wire loop is intact.
- Clear the safety state. Enter your PIN or confirm in the app, and make sure the top cover and stop button are fully seated and released.
- Charge fully before testing. Clean the charging contacts on the mower and dock with a dry cloth, seat the mower in the dock, and let it reach a normal charge before trying to start.
- Check the signal. On wire-fed models, inspect the wire for cuts near the edges and the station connectors. On RTK models, confirm the mower has a satellite fix outdoors with a clear sky view.
- Review schedule and weather settings. Turn off any active rain, frost, or quiet-hours hold, and confirm today falls within the mowing calendar.
- Inspect underneath. Clear grass buildup, twigs, or debris around the wheels and blade disc that could trigger a blockage sensor.
When it is the mower, not the lawn
If the dock has power, the PIN is cleared, the battery charges normally, and the signal is present but the mower still refuses to run, the fault is more likely internal. Warning signs include a battery that will not hold or accept charge, a mower that powers on but reports a repeating hardware error, unresponsive buttons or display, or a motor that hums without turning. A blade motor that trips instantly under no load also points to a mechanical or electronic fault rather than a setting.
