Can a robot mower handle my 28-degree driveway?

A 28-degree slope is about a 53 percent grade. Of these four, only the Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD 5000's record rates it above that, at 80 percent, about 39 degrees. The Husqvarna Automower 450X NERA is rated to 50 percent and the 320 NERA to 50 percent inside the work area and 25 percent at the boundary. The Worx Landroid M 20V is rated 35 or 30 percent, depending on the US model page.

What is the difference between uphill grade and sideways slope safety?

Uphill grade is the angle along the direction of travel. Sideways slope is the tilt across it, which shifts weight onto the downhill wheels and raises the risk of sliding or tipping. None of these robots' records states a separate sideways rating. The closest is the Husqvarna Automower 320 NERA, rated to 50 percent inside the work area but only 25 percent at the boundary, where the mower turns along the edge.

Does a heavier mower always climb better?

Not by weight alone. The Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD 5000 is the heaviest at 41.9 lb and has all-wheel drive, with the highest slope rating here at 80 percent. The Husqvarna Automower 450X NERA (33.1 lb) and 320 NERA (28.2 lb) drive their two rear wheels and are rated to 50 percent. The Worx Landroid M 20V weighs 29.8 lb and is rated 35 or 30 percent. Its drive layout is not verified on its record.

Do sloped yards require more frequent charging?

Climbing takes more energy, but none of these robots' records measures how much faster each battery drains on a slope. Rated runtimes on record are 215 min for the Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD 5000, 145 min for the Husqvarna Automower 450X NERA and 135 min for the 320 NERA. The Worx Landroid M 20V's runtime is not verified, and its record notes no hill detection or slope assistance.

Can I manually map out the steep areas to keep the mower out?

Yes, with different tools. The Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD 5000 draws boundaries and no-go zones in its app, and its record shows why to map hazards: an unmapped ditch left it stopped and needing retrieval. Both Husqvarna Automowers use a boundary wire as sold, with EPOS virtual boundaries available as an add-on. The Worx Landroid M 20V uses a boundary wire, so a steep area is kept out by routing the wire around it.

Does all-wheel drive mean a steeper rating?

Not from these pages alone. Mammotion pairs all-wheel drive with 80%. Husqvarna rates the 420 iQ at 45% with two drive wheels.

Is there a separate limit at the boundary?

Husqvarna’s manual says virtual boundaries on the 420 iQ go in slopes of 15% or less. Mammotion prints one figure, so no boundary limit was found for it.

Is 80% the same as 80 degrees?

No. Percent grade is rise over run. Mammotion prints its 80% as 38.6 degrees, so compare the unit before the number.
