Roborock S8 Max Ultra with Refill & Drainage System · Roborock S8 Pro Ultra
All robot vacuums. Every measure below is plotted against the full class, so a difference can be read against how much the class itself varies.

What each one does on its own.
The Autonomy Ladder is the same five rungs for every robot on the site. A rung describes the conditions a robot handles without you, not how good it is.
Where they actually differ.
The Robovations Score is nine inputs across three pillars, each weighted as shown and each scored so that more is better. A robot can lead on one and trail on another, which is the point of showing them apart. Cost of ownership and data handling are reported on each robot's own page and are never averaged into the score.

Not compared, because fewer than two of these robots carry a published figure: Charge time, Noise, Weight.
What the numbers leave out.
The trade-off
What each design gives up to be good at what it is good at.
The dock takes over every water chore, and in exchange it needs plumbing work before its first run.
Structured-light obstacle avoidance keeps a camera out of the home; Vacuum Wars found the camera model avoided obstacles better.
Dock automation reduces hands-on effort but requires monthly filter maintenance and significant floor space, offsetting convenience gains for small homes or renters.
Sonic mop vibration excels on sealed hard floors but underperforms on textured grout and tile compared to manual scrubbing.
Who each one is wrong for
Stated by the record itself. A robot being wrong for a household is a fact about fit, not a fault.
- Renters or homes without a nearby water line and drain
- The dock must connect to a water supply and a drain within Roborock's stated distances, which many layouts cannot provide.
- Buyers who want a camera for obstacle recognition
- It uses structured light rather than a camera, and Vacuum Wars found the camera-equipped S8 MaxV Ultra avoided obstacles better.
- Dock sites behind a threshold over 2 cm
- Roborock's installation guidance warns against thresholds, tracks or steps above 2 cm between the dock and the cleaning area.
- Buyers who need an independent test of the plumbed version
- Vacuum Wars tested the standard-dock S8 Max Ultra and said it had not reviewed the refill and drainage variant.
- Homes with irregular layouts or constant furniture rearrangement
- No L4 adaptation. Frequent rearrangement requires manual map updates via app.
- Owners unwilling to provide monthly dock maintenance
- Dock filter rinse and sump cleaning required monthly. Missing maintenance voids autonomy and risks pump damage.
- Homes with no permanent spot for the dock
- The dock takes roughly 43 by 45 cm of floor, stands about 51 cm tall, and needs an outlet plus a clear approach path. It is not something to move between rooms between runs.
- Homes with high-pile carpet or thick shag
- Suction and mop design optimized for medium pile and hard floors. High nap tangles brush and reduces autonomy.
What stays your job
The upkeep ownership hands back to you, whatever the autonomy level says.
- As needed: Replace the 2.5 L dock dust bag; Roborock sells 6-packs.
- Every 3-6 months: Refill the 580 ml detergent tank, which Roborock says lasts over three months.
- As needed: Check the water inlet and drain connections for leaks, per Roborock’s installation notes.
- As needed: Replace mop cloths and edge mop cloths; Roborock’s US store sells both.
- As needed: Replace the washable filters and main brush pack, which Roborock’s US store sells for the S8 Max Ultra.
- Weekly: Empty dustbin (0.4L), inspect side brush for hair tangles.
- Weekly: Rinse mop pads if dock wash not used; check for mat fibers.
- Monthly: Dock filter rinse under running water, sump inspection for dust.
- Monthly: Wipe the LiDAR turret and the front sensor window with a soft cloth.
- Every 3-6 months: Inspect dock pump inlet for debris clogs.
- Annually: Replace main brush and side brush (OEM cost ~$40).
How much each of these is standing on.
Classifications rest on different depths of evidence. A pre-release assessment and a verified one are not the same kind of claim.
