What each design gives up to be good at what it is good at.

iRobot Roomba Combo j9+

Camera-based navigation and iRobot OS object recognition come with no subscription attached, but the map is built by driving and seeing rather than by laser, and transparent obstacles remain the documented edge case.

Self-empty and the D.R.I. pad lift address real maintenance pain points, but the dock footprint claims a permanent piece of floor beside an outlet.

ROIDMI EVA

The dock is designed to self-empty and self-wash mop pads, but an independent review found the design under-delivered on both counts in practice, before the manufacturer’s closure removed any path to a fix.

Remaining retail inventory can still be found through some third-party channels, but buying it now means buying a robot with no manufacturer support of any kind.

Apartments or rentals without dock space
The self-empty dock is large and wants a permanent spot next to a power outlet. It plugs into the wall and nothing else, so the constraint is floor area rather than installation. Manual-empty models exist at lower total cost for tight rooms.
Privacy-focused households
WiFi and cloud-based app are central to operation. No offline-only mode available. WiFi connectivity essential; no alternative local-only control path.
Budget-constrained owners
Hardware price is the barrier rather than running costs. Mapping, room labels, zones, Keep Out Zones and scheduling are free in the iRobot Home app, and dock bags run about $40 a year. Self-emptying vacuums without the mop cost considerably less.
Homes dominated by thick or high-pile carpet
Mop pad effectiveness degrades on deep pile. Vacuum suction nominal on thick carpets. Bare-floor or low-pile homes perform significantly better.
Owners unwilling to enable firmware auto-updates
Ongoing firmware releases fix bugs and adjust behavior. Updates auto-install when docked; no opt-out available. Manual-control models exist if required.
ROIDMI EVA
Buyers wanting any form of manufacturer support
Roidmi has ceased operations and discontinued product maintenance, returns, and after-sales service.
Large homes needing a single uninterrupted cleaning run
An independent review found the dustbin fills too fast to complete a full-floor clean without manual emptying.
Buyers relying on the dock to fully dry mop pads unattended
The same independent review found pads remained damp more than 12 hours after the drying cycle.

  • After every use: No routine step; the robot empties its bin into the dock on its own.
  • Weekly: Remove pet hair and debris from main brush and side brush to prevent entanglement.
  • Weekly: Rinse the mop pad and check the dock’s water level.
  • Roughly monthly: Refill the dock’s 3 liter water reservoir by hand; iRobot puts a full reservoir at about 30 days of mopping.
  • Every 60 days: Replace the dock bag. iRobot Dirt Disposal Bags sell as a 3-pack at about $19.99, roughly $6.70 a bag, which is about $40 a year at that interval.
  • Every 3-6 months: Deep-clean dock interior, filters, and suction motor to maintain suction performance.
ROIDMI EVA
  • After every use: Pull the mop pads to air-dry after mopping runs; an independent review found the dock’s drying cycle left pads damp more than 12 hours later.
  • Weekly: Refill the dock’s clean-water tank and empty the dirty-water tank.
  • Monthly: Rinse the dock’s wash tray, check the dual spinning pads for wear, and wipe the LiDAR turret and infrared sensors.
  • As needed: Replace the dust bag; ROIDMI rated it for roughly 60 days per bag.
  • As needed: Source bags, pads, and filters from third parties; Roidmi’s December 2024 closure ended official parts supply and after-sales service.
