The trade-off
What each design gives up to be good at what it is good at.
The dock eliminates manual mop rinsing, but introduces a 20-30 minute wash-and-dry cycle that conflicts with quiet household hours.
Ecovacs publishes up to 290 minutes in silent mode on hard floor, but that is a best case; raising suction toward the 11,000 Pa maximum shortens a charge substantially, and no runtime at that setting is published.
The automated dock adds convenience but brings its own upkeep, mop pads, dust bags and tank refills, that a budget vacuum does not carry.
Local processing keeps map data in the home, and it does not cost the map: photorealistic 3D mapping, semantic map views, no-go zones and scheduling all appear in the app, computed on the robot rather than in the cloud. The cost is physical instead: a 7.8 inch body that will not fit under most beds and sofas, and about 25 pounds to carry between floors.
Who each one is wrong for

- The robot carries a camera and depends on the Ecovacs cloud, and no fully local mode is documented. Ecovacs has a documented security incident history across the Deebot line, including a 2024 DEF CON demonstration of Bluetooth takeover and a subsequent CISA advisory covering Deebot vacuums and base stations.
- Homes requiring silent daytime operation
- Dock wash cycles run 20-30 minutes at 60-70 dB after mop sessions. Owner reports note scheduling conflicts in work-from-home environments.
- Buyers requiring offline or local-only operation
- All advanced features depend on Ecovacs cloud servers. No documented local-only scheduling or mapping mode. Cloud connectivity is required for routine operation.
- Single-floor homes exceeding 3,000 sq ft
- Ecovacs publishes up to 290 minutes in silent mode on hard floor, which is a best case; higher suction modes draw that down, so very large floors take a mid-session recharge and a longer total elapsed time.

- Matic works slowly and quietly. Vacuum Wars timed it at about 227 minutes on a space other machines finish in about 60, and Matic rates 2.5 hours of vacuuming or 3 hours of mopping per charge at 55 dB and 52 dB respectively. It is built to run in the background rather than to finish quickly.
