Aiper Scuba S1

Cordless simplicity trades against endurance: there is no cable to drag or untangle, but the machine runs on what the battery holds, and independent bench testing measured 60 to 70 minutes against Aiper’s up-to-180 figure. Corded cleaners run as long as they are plugged in.

Zodiac MX8 Elite

No electricity in the water and no separate booster pump required. The offset: runtime is entirely dictated by the pump schedule, not a detected cleaning need.

maX-Drive runs programmed 360-degree patterns and the cleaner climbs to the tile line. The offset: it is entirely mechanical, with no sensors, no map, and no record of what it covered, so an owner verifies coverage by looking.

Who each one is wrong for

Stated by the record itself. A robot being wrong for a household is a fact about fit, not a fault.

Aiper Scuba S1
Pools over 1,600 sq ft or longer than 50 ft
Aiper rates the Scuba S1 to 1,600 sq ft and 50 ft of pool length. Past that, single-charge coverage is not rated, and independent bench testing measured real runtime at 60 to 70 minutes against Aiper's up-to figure, so a large pool means multiple cycles with a recharge between them.
Heavily silted or algae-laden water
Wheel brushes and suction design suited to moderate loads. High algae growth or sand settlement requires pre-filtration or chemical treatment.
Owners who want scheduling or app control
The Scuba S1 has no wifi, no Bluetooth and no app. It is a manual start: put it in the pool, press the button, retrieve it when it finishes. Scheduling and remote control belong to the S1 Pro, not to this model.
Zodiac MX8 Elite
Pools with complex freeform shapes or multiple deep ends
Irregular boundaries increase swivel-cable tangle frequency, requiring repeated manual unwinding and repositioning throughout cleaning sessions.
Owners expecting app control, scheduling, or smart-home integration
No connectivity of any kind. The cleaner runs when the pump runs. Owners wanting remote control, timed automation, or status alerts need a robotic or pressure-side platform.
Above-ground pools and pools without a working skimmer or dedicated suction line
The MX8 Elite draws entirely from the existing pump and mounts to a skimmer or dedicated suction port. Pools without one, which includes most above-ground installations, cannot run it.
Owners expecting the cleaner to hold debris on board
Suction-side architecture routes everything into the pump strainer basket and the pool filter rather than a bag on the machine. Pools under trees fill the basket quickly, and an inline leaf canister such as the Zodiac CLC500, bundled with some packages and around $70 separately, is what keeps that manageable.

What stays your job

The upkeep ownership hands back to you, whatever the autonomy level says.

Aiper Scuba S1
  • After every use: Empty the debris basket; rinse the filter cartridge.
  • After every use: Rinse the unit with fresh water and let it dry, then charge it indoors on a dry surface away from the pool, using only the supplied charger. A full charge takes 3 to 4 hours.
  • While charging: Use only the supplied charger, keep the unit on a hard non-combustible surface, and do not leave a charge running unattended overnight. Both CPSC recalls on Aiper’s cordless line have been charging-path failures: the Elite Pro GS100 in August 2023 (recall 23-784, about 22,000 units, 17 reports of the battery overheating) and the Seagull Pro in March 2025 (recall 25-187, about 32,660 units, 19 reports of units melting, smoking or catching fire on charge). The Scuba S1 is the model CPSC published as the free remedy for the 2025 recall and is covered by neither recall itself.
  • Weekly: Deep rinse of the filter cartridge under running water.
  • Monthly: Check the treads and brush for embedded grit or tangled debris that could affect climbing.
  • Seasonally: Pool winterization; drain the robot and store it indoors in freezing climates.
Zodiac MX8 Elite
  • After every use: Check and empty the pump strainer basket; empty the inline leaf canister if one is fitted, roughly 2 minutes.
  • Monthly: Inspect swivel hose for kinks or cracks; clean deflector wheel of debris buildup.
  • Every 3-6 months: Inspect drive tracks and cyclonic brushes for wear; replace the brushes when they no longer hold contact with the surface.
  • Annually: Inspect all O-rings and seals for cracking; check the flap valve and replace if suction pressure has measurably dropped.
  • As needed: Winterize by removing from pool, draining all hose sections, and storing in a dry location to prevent freeze-related cracking.
