All robot vacuums. Every figure below is placed against the whole class, so a gap can be read against how much the class itself varies.
The conditions each robot was assessed against, side by side. Rows marked in gold are where these machines genuinely differ.
| Condition | Roomba Combo j9+ | Roborock S8 Max Ultra… |
|---|---|---|
| Home size | ||
| Under 1,500 sqft | GoodRuntime covers typical 1,000-1,500 sq. ft. in one session; single-tank water coverage sufficient for mopping. | GoodRoborock lists up to 180 minutes of runtime, and the dock handles water without refills. |
| 1,500 – 3,000 | GoodHandles 1,500-3,000 sq. ft. with scheduled multi-session runs. Dock location centers coverage for efficient path optimization. | GoodIndependent lab testing saw nearly perfect coverage, and plumbing removes tank refills on long runs. |
| Over 3,000 | DependsOver 3,000 sq. ft. requires split-session runs or advanced scheduling. Separate maps needed for multi-floor homes; adds complexity. | DependsIndependent lab testing rated its navigation efficiency about average, and no large-home test was found. |
| Primary floors | ||
| Hard floors | GoodVacuum and mop both perform well on bare wood and tile. Obstacle avoidance works reliably on hard floors; no carpet-retract needed. | GoodIndependent lab testing found near-perfect debris pickup and strong stain removal on hard floors. |
| Low / medium pile | GoodVacuum suction rated for low-pile carpet. Mop-retract prevents wet-carpet damage on thin carpet; owner reports confirm reliable detection. | GoodIndependent lab testing found carpet pickup nearly perfect, and pads lift 20 mm to stay dry. |
| High pile / shagthey differ | PoorSuction loss documented on shag and high-pile carpet. Mop-retract detection fails on deep pile; wet-carpet risk even with auto-retract enabled. | DependsIndependent lab testing rated its airflow and carpet deep clean below average, and no high-pile test was found. |
| Mopping needs | ||
| Vacuum only | GoodVacuums first; the mop pad is optional. | GoodStrong vacuum; the mop lifts or detaches when not needed. |
| Light mopping | GoodFlat mop pad handles light, routine wiping of hard floors. | GoodActive mopping system covers routine floors easily. |
| Frequent moppingthey differ | DependsA dragged pad freshens floors but lacks the pressure or scrubbing for heavy, frequent mopping. | GoodPressure or rotating mop with self-wash is built for frequent mopping. |
| Upkeep you accept | ||
| Regular upkeep | GoodAbout 115 minutes of upkeep a month. | GoodAbout 20 minutes of upkeep a month. |
| Some upkeepthey differ | DependsAbout 115 minutes of upkeep a month, which is over an hour. | GoodAbout 20 minutes of upkeep a month. |
| Minimal upkeepthey differ | PoorAbout 115 minutes of upkeep a month, which is over an hour. | GoodAbout 20 minutes of upkeep a month, and the dock empties the bin. |
A robot being poor for a condition is a fact about fit, not a fault. “Depends” means the record names a limit worth reading, not that the answer is unknown.
Nine inputs across three pillars, each weighted as shown and each scored so more is better. A robot can lead on one and trail on another, which is the point of showing them apart.
A number only means something next to the spread it sits in. Each track is the real range across every classified robot in the class, with the median marked.
Not compared, because fewer than two of these robots carry a published figure: Charge time, Noise, Weight.
Written on each record, and the only thing here every robot on the site carries.
What each design gives up to be good at what it is good at.
Camera-based navigation and iRobot OS object recognition come with no subscription attached, but the map is built by driving and seeing rather than by laser, and transparent obstacles remain the documented edge case.
Self-empty and the D.R.I. pad lift address real maintenance pain points, but the dock footprint claims a permanent piece of floor beside an outlet.
The dock takes over every water chore, and in exchange it needs plumbing work before its first run.
Structured-light obstacle avoidance keeps a camera out of the home; independent lab testing found the camera model avoided obstacles better.
Stated by the record itself. A robot being wrong for a household is a fact about fit, not a fault.
The upkeep ownership hands back to you, whatever the autonomy level says.
Classifications rest on different depths of evidence. A pre-release assessment and a verified one are not the same kind of claim.

Evidence status counts the sources behind a classification, not their kind. A high count can be maker documentation and price coverage, so read it as how much was reviewed rather than as independent testing. How we weigh evidence.
