    What happened

Early access is planned for the first half of 2027. Independent evidence that the cooperative safety claims hold on a customer floor is the item to watch.

    Bottom line

The launch documents a design and a schedule; performance around people remains to be shown outside the maker's own demonstrations.

    Impact

    On autonomy

    • Sensors and AI now detect nearby people, and the robot avoids them, stops, or sits.
    • A separate safety controller triggers those responses, independent of the main control software.
    • Manipulation skills are to be added through the maker's physical AI training approach.

    On readiness

    • Early access is planned for the first half of 2027, with general availability by year-end.
    • The maker reports more than $300 million in multi-year orders as of May 2026, subject to milestones.
    • The maker says the product remains in development and features may change before release.

First humanoid engineered for cooperatively safe work at scale
Documented findingThe description comes from the maker; launch coverage repeats it, and no independent field evaluation of Digit 5 had been reported at announcement.
More than 20 productive hours per day from a 90-minute battery and 9-minute charge
Documented findingA calculated figure from the maker's run-to-charge ratio; no customer-floor measurement of a Digit 5 working day had been published.
$300 million in multi-year customer orders
Documented findingThe maker states the orders are subject to contractual milestones, product features and specifications. Launch coverage reports they come from a single customer.

    Hardware Changes

The maker lists Digit 5 at 5 feet 11 inches and 284 pounds. Its legs now bend in a human-like direction, replacing the backward-bending legs of the prior generation, which lets it crouch and kneel without striking its ankles on the floor. Rated repeated lift is 50 pounds, about 40 percent more than before, with a reach of 7.2 feet versus 5.5 feet. End-effectors are swappable on an ISO-standard mount.

    Battery

The battery runs about 90 minutes and recharges in about 9 minutes, a 10-to-1 work-to-charge ratio the maker says supports more than 20 hours of work in a 24-hour day.

    Safety Architecture

The robot monitors for people with proprietary AI and multiple sensors. Depending on the situation it steers around a person, stops, or drops into a seated position with motors shut down. Visual and audio cues signal intended motion, and a separate safety controller handles the responses.

    Availability

Early access is planned for the first half of 2027, with general availability for manufacturers and warehouse operators by the end of that year. The maker also plans its first entry into European Union and UK markets.
