Robot Pool Cleaner Power Supply Not Working or Tripping? Fixes

Why this happens

A robotic pool cleaner runs on low-voltage DC from an external power supply, which converts household current for the unit. The GFCI outlet feeding that supply watches for current leaking to ground and cuts power the instant it senses one. Water bridging the pins of the cable connector, a supply placed where splash or condensation reaches it, or a failing transformer inside the supply can all create that leak. The outlet is doing its job when it trips. The task is finding what is leaking, not defeating the protection.

Fix it in order

Work through these from the top. Unplug the power supply before you touch the cable or the unit.

  1. Dry the connector. Separate the cable from the power supply and look for water or corrosion on the pins. Dry both sides completely and let them air out before reconnecting. Moisture here is the single most common trip cause.
  2. Reset the GFCI properly. Press Reset firmly on the outlet, then plug the supply in with the unit already in the water. A GFCI that will not hold a reset with nothing plugged in points at the outlet itself.
  3. Move the power supply back. Set it on a dry, shaded surface a few feet from the pool edge, above splash level and out of direct sun. Supplies placed on wet decking or in a puddle trip repeatedly.
  4. Remove any extension cord. Plug the supply straight into the outlet. Extension cords add resistance and failure points, many are not rated for outdoor wet locations, and manufacturers generally advise against them. Use a longer cable run to the unit instead, not a longer power cord.
  5. Test the outlet with another device. Confirm the outlet has power and is not on a tripped breaker. If a known-good device also trips it, the outlet or circuit is the fault, not the cleaner.
  6. Inspect the cable for damage. Run the full cable length through your hands, feeling for cuts, kinks, or a swollen section. A nicked cable underwater leaks current and trips the GFCI.

If it still will not run

  • A repeatedly tripping GFCI. If it trips again after the connector is dry and the supply is relocated, stop. Do not keep resetting it and do not bypass it. Have a qualified electrician check the outlet and the supply.
  • A sealed power supply. Never open the supply housing. It carries line voltage and is not user-serviceable. A supply that is warm, buzzing, or dead on a known-good outlet has likely failed and needs replacement.
  • No lights or fans. If the supply shows no indicator light and its fan never spins on a working outlet, the transformer or internal electronics have failed.

When it is the robot, not your pool

A few signs point at the hardware rather than your wiring or water:

  • The supply trips a healthy GFCI even with the cable disconnected from it.
  • The unit is silent on a supply and outlet you have confirmed good.
  • A known failure or recall exists for that supply.

Firmware updates and manufacturer-side changes get logged on the robot’s record and in the Tracker.
