The Autonomy Ladder is the same five rungs for every robot on the site. A rung describes the conditions a robot handles without you, not how good it is.

02 Assessment

Where they actually differ.

The Robovations Score is nine inputs across three pillars, each weighted as shown and each scored so that more is better. A robot can lead on one and trail on another, which is the point of showing them apart. Cost of ownership and data handling are reported on each robot's own page and are never averaged into the score.

04 Ownership

What the numbers leave out.

The trade-off

What each design gives up to be good at what it is good at.

iRobot Roomba Max 705 Vac

Peak suction trails the category leaders: iRobot publishes no Pascal figure for the 705 and rates it at 180 times the 600 series, while third-party figures put it near 13,000 Pa, roughly 5,500 to 17,000 Pa below current Roborock flagships depending on which one is meant. The 705 answers carpet with Carpet Boost, four suction levels and anti-tangle rubber brushes rather than with peak pressure.

iRobot Roomba Max 775 Combo

You are paying flagship money for the dock rather than the navigation. The AutoWash Dock is not new hardware, it has been iRobot’s mop-washing base since the Combo 10 Max in 2024, but it is where most of the price and all of the floor space goes.

Hot-water capability removes manual mop-fill friction, but it shifts dock failure modes from simple (a clogged nozzle) to compound (water circulation, heating, the roller wash cycle). Recovery means dock troubleshooting, not just a part swap.

Longitudinal data is thin. The machine launched in June 2026, so owner reports on roller wear, the dock’s water circuit and long-run map stability are still sparse. The classification rests on published specification more than on accumulated field evidence.

Who each one is wrong for

Stated by the record itself. A robot being wrong for a household is a fact about fit, not a fault.

iRobot Roomba Max 705 Vac
Homes that need mopping as well as vacuuming
This is the vacuum-only SKU and it does not mop. iRobot sells a Combo version of the same platform that does, and the two listings read almost identically, so the SKU is worth confirming before purchase.
Owners wanting mopping and vacuuming in one cycle
No mopping arm or tank. Requires separate unit or manual floor care. Adds operational complexity if kitchen / entryway spills are frequent.
Owners who do not want a consumable dock at all
The AutoEmpty dock is bagged. iRobot rates a bag at up to 75 days and the box includes one spare bag and one spare filter, after which bags run about $10 to $15 each. A bagless dock or a bin-only robot avoids that line item entirely.
iRobot Roomba Max 775 Combo
Homes with frequent layout changes
The stored map is what the robot routes against, and a major furniture rearrangement means updating it before zones and schedules line up again. Lighting is not part of this: LiDAR maps in the dark.
Renters or homes with restrictive power outlet placement
The AutoWash Dock needs permanent AC power and a dedicated footprint of 17.7 x 16.7 x 17 in at about 19 lb. There is no battery-dock option, and moving the dock means the robot has to re-establish itself against the map. Smaller fixed-dock units suit temporary living better.
Owners prioritizing absolute minimum maintenance
A dock with clean and dirty water tanks is more to look after than an auto-empty base: tanks to fill and drain, a wash tray to wipe, and a debris bag to change. An auto-empty-only vacuum has one of those chores.
Single-floor apartments under 1,500 sqft seeking mop-only performance
Oversized for a mop-only home in both senses: the robot is 14.7 in front to back and the dock claims a permanent 17.7 by 16.7 in of floor. Vacuum-to-mop time is weighted toward vacuuming, and a dedicated mop unit is simpler in a compact space.

What stays your job

The upkeep ownership hands back to you, whatever the autonomy level says.

iRobot Roomba Max 705 Vac
  • Weekly: Check the dual rubber brushes for hair wrap and clear the edge-sweeping brush.
  • Monthly: Clean or replace the robot’s filter; inspect the dock brush and charging contacts.
  • Up to every 75 days: Replace the AutoEmpty dock bag, which iRobot rates at up to 75 days. The box ships with a spare bag and a spare filter.
  • Annually: Clean the LiDAR window and the PrecisionVision camera, and inspect the dock mechanics.
iRobot Roomba Max 775 Combo
  • Weekly: Refill the clean-water tank and empty the dirty-water tank; wipe the wash tray.
  • Monthly: Clear hair from the brushes and the roller mop; clean the side brush, wheels and sensor windows.
  • Every 3 months: Replace the dock’s debris bag, which iRobot rates for up to three months of collection.
  • Every 3-6 months: Check the dock’s water lines and tanks for mineral buildup if you fill with hard water.
  • Annually: Replace the robot’s filter and inspect the dock’s hose connections for cracks.
05 Evidence

How much each of these is standing on.

Classifications rest on different depths of evidence. A pre-release assessment and a verified one are not the same kind of claim.
