The trade-off

What each design gives up to be good at what it is good at.

Aiper Scuba X1

A 3 micron cartridge holds what a standard basket passes straight through, but all of it comes out by hand: the cleaner is lifted from the water and the 5 L basket rinsed at the pool edge.

WavePath 3.0 avoids the cost and the failure modes of a camera system, but it also avoids the map: there is no stored floor plan to review, name or edit between cycles.

At roughly $899 the Scuba X1 sits about $800 under the Maytronics Liberty 600’s $1,729 MSRP, but it arrives with a shorter public record: Aiper publishes no service-part pricing and no battery replacement terms, so long-run ownership cost is undocumented.

Hayward AquaVac 650

Mains power removes any runtime ceiling, so a full floor, wall and waterline cycle runs to completion in one pass, but the 55 ft cord has to be paid out and retrieved at every session.

SpinTech separation takes the filter cartridge out of the ownership cost entirely, but debris still has to be emptied from the canister by hand after each cycle.

Owners who want the machine to empty itself
The 5 L basket is top-loaded and emptied by hand at the pool edge, which means lifting the cleaner out of the water after a cycle. Nothing about that step is automated.
Pools with heavy leaf debris or large obstacles
WavePath 3.0 avoids objects but slower pathfinding than camera-vision systems; heavy debris loads may trigger premature obstacle avoidance and incomplete coverage. Pre-skimming required during fall.
Owners wanting app-free operation
Scheduling and cleaning history are app-only. Running the cleaner without the app means pressing the start button for every cycle.
Hayward AquaVac 650
Pools larger than 20 ft by 40 ft
Hayward rates the AquaVac 650 up to 20 ft by 40 ft. Larger pools fall outside the published sizing, and the 55 ft cord bounds how far the cleaner can work from the power supply.
Owners wanting zero app setup
First deployment requires a Hayward app account and Wi-Fi pairing before scheduling and remote mode selection are available.
Owners who want a cordless cleaner
The AquaVac 650 is corded. A 55 ft cord runs from the poolside power supply to the cleaner and has to be paid out, retrieved and coiled onto the caddy at each session.

What stays your job

The upkeep ownership hands back to you, whatever the autonomy level says.

  • After every use: Lift the cleaner out, empty the 5 L top-load basket and rinse the MicroMesh cartridge with a hose; let the machine air-dry before charging.
  • While charging: Use the supplied charger, set the machine on a hard non-combustible surface away from the pool, and do not leave a charge running unattended overnight. Both CPSC recalls on Aiper’s cordless line have been charging faults, neither covering the Scuba X1: the Elite Pro GS100 in August 2023 (recall 23-784, about 22,000 units, 17 reports of the battery overheating when the cord was connected without the adapter or directly to the charging port) and the Seagull Pro in March 2025 (recall 25-187, about 32,660 units, 19 reports of units melting, smoking or catching fire on charge, traced to the high-current adapter). The 2023 recall was remedied with a free Seagull Pro, the model recalled in 2025.
  • Monthly: Deep-clean the MicroMesh cartridge; check the charging contacts for corrosion.
  • Every 3-6 months: Inspect the brushes and tracks for wear and lodged debris.
  • Seasonally: Charge the pack before storage and top it up over the off-season; store the cleaner dry and above freezing.
Hayward AquaVac 650
  • After every use: Release the TouchFree canister and empty it; rinse the canister and the cleaner’s intake. SpinTech separation uses no filter cartridge, so there is nothing to replace on a schedule.
  • Weekly: Rinse the rollers to clear algae residue and check them for embedded grit.
  • Every 3-6 months: Inspect the rollers for wear and replace when the tread is gone. Hayward publishes no replacement interval or price.
  • Seasonally: Rinse the cleaner with fresh water at pool close, coil the cord onto the caddy, and store the unit and its power supply indoors in freeze-zone climates.
