01 Classification

What each one does on its own.

The Autonomy Ladder is the same five rungs for every robot on the site. A rung describes the conditions a robot handles without you, not how good it is.

02 Assessment

Where they actually differ.

The Robovations Score is nine inputs across three pillars, each weighted as shown and each scored so that more is better. A robot can lead on one and trail on another, which is the point of showing them apart. Cost of ownership and data handling are reported on each robot's own page and are never averaged into the score.

04 Ownership

What the numbers leave out.

The trade-off

What each design gives up to be good at what it is good at.

Roborock Qrevo Master

The retractable arm adds capability at the cost of dock complexity. Mop-pad alignment and rotating-mechanism maintenance will dominate the hands-on effort, not the base autonomy.

Self-washing pads trade a chore for a consumable. The station rinses and dries the pads after each run instead of leaving that to the sink, and the pads still wear out and get replaced; a stationary pad you wash yourself lasts longer between purchases because it spends less time in a wash cycle.

Roborock S8 Max Ultra with Refill & Drainage System

The dock takes over every water chore, and in exchange it needs plumbing work before its first run.

Structured-light obstacle avoidance keeps a camera out of the home; Vacuum Wars found the camera model avoided obstacles better.

Who each one is wrong for

Stated by the record itself. A robot being wrong for a household is a fact about fit, not a fault.

Roborock Qrevo Master
Renters or frequent-move situations
The station is 340 mm (13.4 in) wide and needs a patch of floor against a wall with an outlet. Nothing is plumbed or permanently installed: the 4L clean and 3.5L dirty water tanks lift out and are filled and emptied by hand, and setup is plugging it in and filling the clean tank. What it costs is fixed floor area, which a small apartment may not have to give.
High-pile or shag carpet homes
Rotating pads are designed for hard and low-pile surfaces. Manufacturer documentation does not recommend use on high-pile carpet.
Owners wanting minimal dock maintenance
Mop pad washing, dust auto-empty, and water tank refills require monthly water tank cleaning and quarterly filter replacement to prevent odor and motor load.
Roborock S8 Max Ultra with Refill & Drainage System
Renters or homes without a nearby water line and drain
The dock must connect to a water supply and a drain within Roborock's stated distances, which many layouts cannot provide.
Buyers who want a camera for obstacle recognition
It uses structured light rather than a camera, and Vacuum Wars found the camera-equipped S8 MaxV Ultra avoided obstacles better.
Dock sites behind a threshold over 2 cm
Roborock's installation guidance warns against thresholds, tracks or steps above 2 cm between the dock and the cleaning area.
Buyers who need an independent test of the plumbed version
Vacuum Wars tested the standard-dock S8 Max Ultra and said it had not reviewed the refill and drainage variant.

What stays your job

The upkeep ownership hands back to you, whatever the autonomy level says.

Roborock Qrevo Master
  • Weekly: Empty the station’s dirty-water tank and refill the clean-water tank; clear hair from the wheels and main brush.
  • Monthly: Rinse the wash tray and the station’s water path; wipe out both tanks.
  • Every 3-6 months: Replace the mop pads once the pile has matted (~$30-40 per pair); replace the main brush and side brush if matted (~$25-35 for a brush kit).
  • Every 6-12 months: Replace the filter; two spares ship in the box.
  • As needed: Replace the station’s dust bag when it is full.
Roborock S8 Max Ultra with Refill & Drainage System
  • As needed: Replace the 2.5 L dock dust bag; Roborock sells 6-packs.
  • Every 3-6 months: Refill the 580 ml detergent tank, which Roborock says lasts over three months.
  • As needed: Check the water inlet and drain connections for leaks, per Roborock’s installation notes.
  • As needed: Replace mop cloths and edge mop cloths; Roborock’s US store sells both.
  • As needed: Replace the washable filters and main brush pack, which Roborock’s US store sells for the S8 Max Ultra.
05 Evidence

How much each of these is standing on.

Classifications rest on different depths of evidence. A pre-release assessment and a verified one are not the same kind of claim.
