Robot Vacuum Brush Not Spinning? Fixes

Why this happens

Brushes turn on small geared motors that are strong enough for normal debris but not for a solid knot of hair. As long strands wind around the axle and pack into the end caps, friction climbs until the motor stalls, and many robots then cut power to that brush to protect the gearbox. The same stall can come from a brush that is seated wrong, a guard clip left off, or a fragment of debris jammed between the brush and its housing.

Fix it in order

Work through these from the top. Most brush faults clear at the first or second step.

  1. Remove and clean the main brush. Release the brush guard, lift the brush out, and cut away every strand of hair and thread wound around the barrel. Pay attention to the axle ends where knots hide.
  2. Clear the end caps and bearings. Pull the colored end caps off each side of the brush and remove the hair packed underneath. This is the single most common hidden cause of a stalled brush.
  3. Check the side brush screw and post. Side brushes are held by a small screw or clip. Remove hair from the post beneath, confirm the screw is snug, and make sure the arms are not bent under the body.
  4. Reseat the brush correctly. A brush installed backward or not clicked fully into its drive coupling will not turn. Match the shaped end to the motor side and confirm the guard clips lock down.
  5. Clear the housing and drive coupling. Look into the empty brush bay for debris jamming the drive gear or coupling, and remove anything wedged there.
  6. Run a test on a hard floor. Start a short clean on a bare floor and watch the brushes. This confirms the fix before you send it back onto carpet.

If the brush still stalls

  • A worn or deformed brush. Bristles that have splayed or a rubber vane that has curled add drag and catch on the housing. A replacement brush is a low-cost consumable.
  • A brush guard installed wrong. The guard that holds the brush must sit flat and latch fully, or it presses the brush into a bind. Reseat it and confirm both clips engage.
  • Thread wound into the gearbox seal. Fine thread can migrate past the end cap into the motor seal. If cleaning the visible axle does not help, the seal area may need clearing.

When it is the robot, not your floors

Sometimes the motor or gearbox has genuinely failed. Tell-tale signs:

  • A clean, hair-free brush still will not turn when reseated correctly.
  • You hear a grinding or clicking gear noise with no visible obstruction.
  • One brush works and the other is dead even after both are cleared, isolating a single motor.

Firmware updates and manufacturer-side changes to brush behavior and stall detection get logged on the robot’s record and in the Tracker.

A vacuum with one stalled brush still carries debris on suction alone in the meantime, so it remains a working tool while you clear the axle rather than a job halted.
